Sowbugs / Pillbugs

SIZE: Pill bugs and sow bugs can grow up to 12 to 13 mm long.

DESCRIPTION: These bugs are a gray color. Pill bugs appear to have a very similar shape to a medicine pill and will roll up into a ball if they feel threatened as oppose to sow bugs which cannot.

BEHAVIOR: Pill bugs and sow bugs are also known as isopods. These insects have gills which is why they prefer moist conditions where they rest during the day and come out at night to feed. They mainly feed on plants, decaying leaf litter, and vegetables and can survive up to 2 years in habitats that benefit to their needs. These insects are not harmful nor do they transmit dieses but usually if they enter a building they come in large groups and can be an annoyance.

HABITATS: Sow bugs and pill bugs are nocturnal and can be found resting in moist or damp areas. These insects can be found buried in soil, outside foundation of buildings, under interlocking or rocks, and cracks and crevices around the outside of your home. If they enter inside the home they will usually die due to dehydration but in some cases if your home provides adequate moisture for them they will start living indoors in places such as the basement, cellars, crawl spaces, near water leakages or anywhere where there is moisture within the house.

TIPS FOR CONTROL

Sow bugs and pill bugs will only infest your home if the outside conditions suit their requirements. A treatment will be temporary relief which is why it is important to follow these tips:

  • Thick ground covering plants such as ivy, monkey grass, etc. should be away from the foundation of the home.
  • Firewood, piles of soil, and other stored items should be lifted above the ground and stored away from the home.
  • All exterior cracks and crevices should be sealed especially along the foundation.
  • Close all weep holes but stuffing wire mesh or steel wool into it.
  • Reduce dampness in home. Purchase a dehumidifier and check for any plumbing leakages that can be causing humidity and wet conditions.
