SIZE: Wasps can range from 13mm to 40 mm in length.
DESCRIPTION: If a wasp nest is around your home be careful not to mistake them for bees as they may have a similar appearance a closer look will let you know the difference. Wasps have no hair on their body as appose to bees and are noticeable due to their very bright yellow color. As oppose to bee’s wasps are aggressive in nature and feed on other insects.
BEHAVIOUR: Wasps will build their nests on eaves of homes, under stairways, inside exterior material or dug into the ground. Their nests are made out of a paper like material, wasp nests consist of a hierarchy that consists of queens, workers and males. Eggs are laid in the cells within the nests and the young are fed insects or leftovers from the workers and queen. Wasps use their nests for only one season and the nest can contain as many as 30,000 wasps. These insects can be beneficial due to the fact that they feed on other insects and work as a natural pest control.
HABITAT: Wasps are very territorial and will sting if they feel they need to protect their nest. Once they place their nests they will start mating. In late summer the queen will produce unfertilized eggs, these will become males and the males later fertilize the wasps that later become the queen for the next year by surviving through the winter in a sheltered location.
