Brown-Banded Cockroach

SIZE: Brown-banded roaches measure about ½ inch long or 1.27cm. Adult females can be much smaller.

DESCRIPTION: Brown-band cockroaches are as they sound, with 2 brown bands running around their wings and abdomen. Females are a dark brown color while males are a light brown color. Both male and female have brown bands running across their wings and abdomen. Although females can’t use their wings to fly the males can if they feel that they are being disturbed.

BEHAVIOR: Like all cockroaches these brown-banded cockroaches love to eat everything as well all the way from any organic matter to feces, but one thing they love to eat is glue which is why you can find them nibbling on stamps, books, wallpaper, envelopes, etc. They also seek for bodily fluids like body oils and skin cells. These roaches will look for open cans, and containers to feast. Brown-banded roaches are known to spread 33 types of bacteria such as protozoa that can cause dieses, gastroenteritis, and even diarrhea.

HABITAT: Brown-banded roaches are found mainly in indoor areas due to their love for heat. They can found behind fridges, stoves, TV’s and electrical components that give off heat. They can also be found hiding within hollow parts of furniture, under clutter, or picture frames on walls. Unlike most cockroach’s brown-banded cockroaches don’t require moist environments as long as they have a water source nearby. Due to their preference for starchy materials these pests can be found in offices, apartments, kitchens and even hospitals. How to get rid of brown band cockroaches?

  • Vacuum more. This will not only keep your carpets and floors clean but also will suck up any egg sacks that can be in the carpet and make it easier for you to spot the presence of insects.
  • Keep your kitchen clean. Pick up crumbs or any spilled beverages immediately. Keep all food sealed and stored away and clean all dishes before going to bed.
  • Put away garbage in a sealed container.
  • Seal all cracks and crevices in your home which allow roaches to nest in and travel.
  • Use baits for brown-band cockroaches and install them in areas described in above HABITATS section.
