SIZE: House flies are around one quarter of an inch in length.
DESCRIPTION: House flies have a grayish black look to them with dark stripes that run down to the thorax.
BEHAVIOR: A house fly can survive in hot and cool climates, they can live up to 2 and a half weeks in hot climates and up to 3 months in cooler climates. A house fly will lay its eggs in a suitable area going as far as 2 miles to look for one and once the eggs the laid they will hatch and turn into maggots within 7 to 8 hours depending on the temperature. The maggot will go into pupal or cocoon stage and will take up to 1 to 3 weeks to become a full grown adult.
House flies are very well known for carrying and spreading disease. Each house fly can carry more than millions of bacteria which is why it is crucial that these flies don’t get into cooking establishments or even near your food. A simple house fly can spread diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid fever unto humans just by simply sitting onto your food or surfaces where you prepare your food. Once a house fly lands on your meal it regurgitates its stomach fluids onto the meal to liquefy it before it ingests it. Not only will a house fly eat your meal but it will also defecate on it also and it is important to remember that once these flies sit on your food they are coming from their homes which is garbage and/or animal waste which is why it is important that if you have a house fly problem to make sure that they stay away from your food.
HABITATS: House flies can be found residing anywhere where there are humans. They strive in areas that have garbage, feces, or decaying matter.
