Don’t let the name fool you, the American cockroach can be found all across the world, It is also the largest house-infesting cockroach across Canada.
SIZE: American Cockroaches measure about 1.5 inches – 2 inches long.
DESCRIPTION: American Cockroaches have light reddish-brown wings, wing size can be as large as the body although males may grow their wings even larger. Almost look circular in figure. They may have seven to eight markings on their thorax and have a band running around their pronotum.
BEHAVIOR: Males are dedicated to increasing their ranks in the eyes of the females due to the male’s high sensitivity for the female’s pheromone known as periplanone-B. Females can produce up to 16 egg sacks after mating and still produce more without mating afterwards. Females will glue their egg sacks in order to keep them protected. They will scrape up paint and or cardboard to cover the sack. Females can lay up to 336 nymphs in her life time which can range from 258 days to 1492 days in the best of conditions. As for a male they have much shorter life spans that range from 90 to 362 days.
HABITAT: American cockroaches can be found in warm, dark, wet and damp areas such as your basement, drain pipe areas, crawl spaces, bathtubs, under your sink, etc. Like most cockroaches this species will eat anything from food to feces but prefers to eat garbage and plant material. As with all roaches, when the American cockroach crawls around your kitchen looking for food they can contaminate surfaces and food items which is why it is always important to put away or cover all food and seal it well, also to wipe down kitchen surfaces regularly.
