BEHAVIOUR: Fruit flies can be seen all year round and can be spotted in the kitchen. They seem to appear from out of nowhere and can quickly become a heavy infestation for home owners, restaurants, offices, cafeterias, and other businesses. Fruit flies will hang around fruits, vegetables and food residue with a strong smell, these flies can contaminate food by carrying harmful bacteria and contamination can be carried into humans by ingesting the contaminated food. Although these flies don’t bite they have still been known to irritate the skin and cause rashes or clusters of red bumps.

Fruit flies can be attracted by bananas, onions, tomatoes, etc. They also are attracted to foods left in cabinets, cupboards and dishes with food residue left in the sink. Female fruit flies can lay up to 500 eggs where under the right conditions a hatchling can develop into a full adult within a week.
